How to brief a UGC creator so the video actually converts

Most brands hand creators a product and a hope. Here's the exact brief structure we use before every shoot — the one that turns 'nice video' into 'add to cart.'

Most UGC briefs fail before the camera even turns on. A brand sends a product, a vague "talk about how much you love it," and crosses its fingers. The creator delivers something polished, on-brand, and completely unconvincing — because nobody told them what problem the viewer is actually trying to solve.

Start with the objection, not the product

Every high-performing UGC video we've shipped starts from the same question: what is the single biggest reason someone scrolls past this product? Price, skepticism, "does it actually work," "is this for someone like me" — pick one, and build the entire 15-30 seconds around answering it. A creator who knows the objection they're defusing will always outperform one who's just been told to "seem excited."

Give them a hook, not a script

Word-for-word scripts read as fake within the first two seconds — audiences are too UGC-literate now. Instead, give creators three things: the hook line (first 3 seconds), the one non-negotiable claim that must be accurate, and the outcome you want the viewer to feel. Let them fill in the rest in their own voice. The videos that hit 30M+ organic views in our portfolio were never fully scripted — they were directed.

Shoot for the platform, not the brand deck

Vertical, handheld, imperfect lighting isn't a compromise — it's the format working as intended. If your product photography team is involved in approving the shot list, you're already losing. Native format beats polish every time on Reels and TikTok.

The brief template we actually use

Objection: the one doubt this video needs to kill.
Hook (0-3s): the line that stops the scroll.
Must-say claim: the one thing that has to be factually precise.
Feeling: what should the viewer feel by second 20 — relief, curiosity, FOMO?
CTA: what happens next — swipe up, comment, search the name?

Send creators this instead of a script, and watch completion rates change.
